Knowing that you have a lot of tasks that has to be done is something that can slow you down. I have how ever experienced that if you write down a list of tasks you’ll quickly move forward.

On this list you write down anything. Even the smallest of tasks – these are in fact the most important ones.

For me to get things done I start of with the easiest tasks, those that are the quickest to get you going. When I start working following the list I quickly comes into the “tasks at hand” mode, and that is when you can start working on the heavier operations on your list.

You should try and organize your task list so that you can take breakes. So you task list could be organized like this:

Easy task

Not as easy

Not easy

Break

Easy task

Not as easy

Not easy

Break (lunch?)

Easy task

Not as easy

Not easy

Break

Easy task

Not as easy

Not easy

An easy task is something that you can get done in a short amount of time, and should be a task that does not psyche you out. It is only on the list to get you started.

The reason for me to break it up like that is because after a break it can be hard to start up again, especially if there is a “not easy” task at hand. You can of course put a “Not Easy/Hard” task after lunch (after an easy-task!) so that you can brag about this tough job you are about to start after lunch. Also. The brain is in a better shape after a good meal/break.

Also: When you are working on your tasks, don’t use Twitter, Chat/IM-software or any other Online applications. Stay focused on your task and save those distractions for your break. Don’t let your breaks last to long. If you smoke it’s quite easy to jail the time because you’ll get back to your workstation when you finish up your smoke. For non-smokers (like myself), set the break to be no more than ten minutes. According to some, you spend quite a lot of minutes to get back into work mode after a break, or after being interrupted.

I have also used this technique when doing my sport – BMX Freestyle. My sessions always started with doing the easy tricks, then working towards the harder stuff. In sports terminology I believe they call this warming up.

It is also a good idea to set a goal for the day. If you are a developer, such a goal could be to fix ten bugs, implement a new feature or writing documentation. When doing BMXF I tried to have a goal to set one trick at least 10 out of 10. Another goal could be to learn a new trick (sometimes a big task!).

There are far smarter people than me who has written articles on how to get things done. Check out the links below.

On this page I will post stuff that might move me back to Windows.

Reasons:

OpenOffice is slow and not as good as MS Office

iPod sync is not stable

Laptop uses more battery than under XP

Not getting enough debug/crash data when Linux Ubuntu freezes (and really freezes)

Not enough pro level programs (Photoshop is one of them)

Reasons to stay:

I’m mainly a PHP-developer. Having the server with you all the time is a nice thing

Compiz is far better than anything on XP

More stable

In short this is who I am:

Male – 1971 model

Interested in Linux, computers, movies, my kids, open source, php, object oriented programming

PHP developer

Ubuntu User

Dell d420 owner

The long version:

I (finally) came to the world on January 5th, 1971. Must have been an easy birth as my mom tends to forget my birthday. When I reached ten years old I got into computers when my father bought an Oric-1 computer. I started learning how to write programs in the Basic language, and I got a fascination for letting the computer play music. I wasn’t that much interested in playing games. The Oric-1 got replaced by an Oric Atmos before I went out and bought myself a Commodore 64. That’s when I really started programming.
I went from Basic to Assembler/Disassembler, cracked games and was part of a cracking “group” called Jazzcat (I was Outfit – which was a name I found under Mafia in a encyclopedia). One of the things I remember from those days were that I managed to write some code that made sprites move on the screen while I could write something (using the interrupts) and that I pixel draw the Jazzcat cat that I found on a cover on a single by The Rolling Stones.

So a few years passed and I got a tad bit distracted by other interests (girls, BMX Freestyle riding) and so my programming was on hold.

Then in 1995-1996 my brother came to me and showed my the internet (which I had not heard of) and two technologies that uses the TCP/IP: IRC and the web browser. And so I got back into using computers by programming scripts under the IRC-client mIRC and websites with HTML (HTML is not programming, HTML is all about Marking up your text). Back in those days (1998-1999 – or when CSS was in it’s 1.0 period) I managed to create a newspaper layout (three columns) without using tables – just CSS.

In this period I also started writing programs in Visual Basic (1.0 to 4.0) and later on I moved to Visual Pascal (Delphi). On the web I started using (classic) ASP and put up a CMS for a website that I had back in those days. I got sick and tired of the way MS did things in ASP, and so when someone told me about PHP I tried that and haven’t really looked back since.

I have been working as a web developer (IT developer is my title on my business card) for a News Agency in Norway. My job there was to trim their web applications (Classic ASP and ASP.Net) and sometimes write applications (VB.Net) that either gather information or distribute information.

I am currently trying to set up my own Web developer company here in Norway. My applications (CMS, Webshop and Intranett) are therefor going through a serious trim in order to make them easy to install and maintain. I have currently two-three customers using the Webshop, one using the CMS and one using my Intranett solution.

If you are looking for someone who could create your web application, please do not hesitate to send an e-mail.
